STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) - Around 70 people voiced their concerns about two planned gas stations on Stevens Point's east side last night. Stevens Point's Plan Commission heard from several Town of Hull residents who are especially concerned about one of the two sites.
Last month, Stevens Point annexed an 18-acre parcel at Highway 10 east and Badger Avenue, where Team Schierl Companies are proposing a new convenience store and gas station.
Town of Hull Chairman John Holdridge says the town feels that type of development is potentially dangerous to hundreds of private wells in the Town of Hull. He says, "We are giving up the annexation fight, but we are not giving up the fight to prohibit gas stations in the wellhead protection area. That wellhead protection area protects not only Hull water, but Stevens Point's water." Holdridge says the best gas station engineering cannot guarantee the safety of their water. "These things happen. Despite the best engineering, with double wall construction and so forth of these gas tanks, human errors occur and that is very risky to our ground water.”
The other planned gas station site is at Highway 10 and Old 18 just off I-39, where Kwik Trip has purchased the property for a new location.
The Plan Commission voted to approve conditional use permits for the new gas stations. The Stevens Point City Council is likely to make the Plan Commission's recommendation final later this month.
Town of Hull residents are wondering if they can stop the city's development.
